Let Us Discuss The Two Basic Categories Of Electricians

  1. Outside electrician- These are the ones who work as a lineman and their work is basically based on the outside of the buildings. They work and take care of tasks like installing electric utility transmission and work related to the distribution of higher voltage lines across the commercial and residential facilities. These people put their lives at risk while dealing with the high voltage wires. They also have to bear the outside weather.

  2. Inside electricians- These are also called wiremen or even electrical technician. Unlike the lineman, the wireman works with lower voltages and their work area is limited to the inside of the buildings. They work on installing, maintaining, and repairing the electrical system in commercial, and industrial buildings. Remember the inside does not mean inside a home and residential area. Their work is limited to commercial places.

Electrician Types Based On The Type Of Certification

  1. Apprentice - If someone plans to become an electrician, this is the first step to start their career by getting the required education and knowledge. To become an apprentice electrician, one needs to have a high school diploma. And for this one has to take hundred classroom hours before formally stepping in as a commercial electrical contractor.

  2. Journeyman - Once they have completed the apprentice program, they can take the test and will be ready to become a journeyman.  After clearing the exam, one will be eligible to receive a license from the local authorities. With this certification, one can work independently, and can also train another apprentice under you.

  3. Master Electrician - This is the highest level of certification. The requirement to become a master electrician may vary from one state to another. Hence, one must check the state before making the final application. Generally, most of the states require you to complete 4000 hours of electrical work as a Journeyman. After this they have to take a licencing exam that will get them official permission. As a master electrician, they are supposed to take up complex tasks.

Types Of Electricians Based On Specialization

  1. Industrial Electricians - These people have the designated task of installing, repairing, and troubleshooting electrical equipment in processing units, factories, mines, and power plants. The industrial electrician reports to the maintenance supervisors. To work as an industrial electrical professional, one mandatory needs to have a certain number of years of experience as an apprentice.

  2. Commercial Electrician - These electrical contractors usually work in commercial spaces like offices, retail stores and other commercial workplaces. They help in designing and planning the electrical system at the time of construction of the building.

  3. Residential Electrician - They are the most common for the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting and upgrading of electrical systems. You would also be required to install and repair the air conditioning units, security systems.

  4. Auto Electrician- As evident from the name, auto electricians are responsible for working on electrical systems and circuits of automotive vehicles. To become an auto electrician, one must have thorough knowledge about the vehicles' electrical systems; you should know about vehicle diagnostics. You should do a proper inspection of the system.  There is a specific certification program for those who want to become auto electricians.
